The pixel city on our homepage didn’t start as an illustration. It started as a list of moments we’d noticed in real life.

The people behind the pixels.

There’s the woman writing at the café table. She’s the reason BackBack exists. The family carrying boxes across the street. We spent a month with them while they moved. The friends on the bench, the cat on the windowsill, the man walking his old dog before work.

Each of them is a composite of people we’ve met, interviewed or simply watched with affection from a park bench.

Why a city?

Apps don’t live on phones. They live in kitchens and parks and trams and on balconies. Drawing a whole city reminded us of that every time we opened the homepage.

Life is made of little moments.

The first line we wrote for the website

Find them all.

If you hover over the city, you’ll find small hearts hidden in it: little moments where something good is happening. There are more than you’d think. That’s sort of the point.

With care, the Uluwatu team
